In the Ruhango district of Southern Rwanda, the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) introduced by the PRISM project has significantly transformed family dynamics and reduced gender-based violence.
GALS is a community-driven empowerment approach that promotes gender equality by encouraging both men and women to engage in open dialogue, reflect on traditional gender roles, and collaboratively plan for their futures.
Before the implementation of GALS, many families in Ruhango experienced conflicts, often arising from financial secrecy and unequal decision-making.
For instance, Consolée Ufitamahoro, a resident of Bunyogombe village, recounted how she and her husband used to conceal their earnings from each other, leading to constant poverty and mistrust. Through GALS training, they learned the importance of transparency and joint financial planning, which not only improved their economic situation but also strengthened their relationship.
Similarly, Elamu Hakizimana admitted to hiding a portion of his income from his wife, which led to frequent disputes and financial mismanagement. After participating in GALS workshops, he recognized the value of consulting his wife on financial matters, resulting in better household planning and harmony.
The Vice Mayor of Ruhango in charge of economic development, Jean Marie Vianney Rusilibana, highlighted that prior to the PRISM project’s intervention, numerous families were embroiled in conflicts primarily due to gender-based violence and property disputes. The GALS approach has been instrumental in changing perceptions, fostering cooperation between couples, and promoting family development.
To date, 302 households in the district have overcome domestic conflicts, thanks to the GALS methodology.
Beyond improving interpersonal relationships, the PRISM project has also provided tangible support to vulnerable families by distributing livestock, including chickens, pigs, and goats.
This initiative has empowered beneficiaries like Ufitamahoro to enhance their livelihoods and work towards ambitious goals, such as building better homes and acquiring more land.
The success of the GALS approach in Ruhango underscores the profound impact of community-led initiatives in addressing deep-seated cultural norms and promoting sustainable development.
Men reporting a reduction in domestic violence have shown an 89% change, with recorded cases decreasing from 962 to 3. This indicates that men often respond more rapidly to targeted interventions, whereas addressing similar issues with women may require more time and effort.
Before the introduction of GALS, 1,786 women reported experiencing domestic violence, mainly involving physical abuse by men, sexual harassment, infidelity, poor sexual relationships, and a lack of support for household needs like food and health insurance. However, following the implementation of GALS, there was a remarkable decline in reported cases of violence, with only 133 incidents recorded, representing a 93% reduction.
