In Gahengeri Sector, Rwamagana District, Merry Year International Rwanda has launched a transformative socio-economic independence support project aimed at empowering teenage single mothers. The initiative seeks to provide these young women with essential skills and support, enabling them to build a brighter future for themselves and their children.
Through this program, teenage mothers are equipped with the necessary tools to break free from the cycle of poverty while fostering self-confidence and resilience. The organization’s commitment extends beyond immediate aid, focusing on long-term solutions that ensure stability and self-reliance.
During the project’s inauguration, Merry Year International Rwanda’s Country Director, Ochul KWON, highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing its role in shaping a hopeful future for young mothers who have faced numerous challenges.
“Today marks more than just an opening; it represents the beginning of a journey toward transformation. Teenage mothers in this community have endured many hardships, and through this program, we aim to equip them with the skills and opportunities needed to establish stable, independent lives,” KWON stated.
He further underscored the importance of providing not only financial assistance but also emotional and psychological support, ensuring that these young women gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to sustain themselves in the long run.
“This project is about more than just temporary relief. We are committed to equipping these young mothers with essential vocational skills, fostering their mental well-being, and building a supportive community around them. Our ultimate goal is to break the cycle of hardship and create a sustainable path toward self-sufficiency,” he added.
Teenage motherhood remains a significant challenge in Rwanda due to limited access to education, healthcare, and societal pressures. Many young mothers find themselves facing uncertain futures. However, Merry Year International Rwanda provides a lifeline through targeted training programs such as tailoring and mindset development.
These practical, marketable skills empower young mothers to generate income and support their families.
Olive Akimana, representing the 20 teenage mothers selected for the program, expressed her deep gratitude:
“On behalf of all teen mothers, I sincerely thank you for transforming our lives. We had lost hope and lived in despair, but now we see a future full of possibilities. We are determined to engage in productive activities, and we assure you that our futures will be brighter.”
For many participants, this opportunity is life-changing. Clarisse Mutimawurugo, a 24-year-old mother of a four-year-old child, shared how the program has restored her sense of purpose.
“I never imagined I would have a future beyond motherhood, but today, I am hopeful. With these skills, I can take care of my child and work toward building something meaningful for myself. I now have dreams again,” she said.
John Bosco Byaruhanga, the Executive Secretary of Gahengeri Sector, encouraged the young mothers to make the most of this opportunity, emphasizing its long-term impact.
“This is your chance to shape a better future. Use this opportunity not just for yourselves, but also for the well-being of your children. Opportunities like this are rare, so make the most of it,” he urged.
Looking ahead, Merry Year International Rwanda aspires to expand the program to reach 200 teenage mothers, equipping them with the necessary tools for success. Beyond supporting young mothers, the organization also actively works to improve agricultural income and productivity for vulnerable groups in the Eastern Province, including single mothers and matriarchal households.
With this initiative, Merry Year International Rwanda is not just providing immediate assistance but laying the foundation for long-term empowerment and self-sufficiency among teenage mothers in Rwamagana.
