Rutsiro: Kivu Beach Expo & Festival set to boost Tourism in Boneza

Preparations are in full swing in Rutsiro District as local leaders and partners finalize plans for the upcoming Kivu Beach Expo & Festival, scheduled for 9–15 December 2025. The event aims to revive tourism in Boneza, promote local culture, and strengthen community-based development along the shores of Lake Kivu.

During site visits, hotel owners and tourism operators expressed strong support for the initiative, saying it will greatly increase visitor traffic and shine a spotlight on Boneza as a unique destination. Operators around Lake Kivu welcomed the festival, noting that it represents a positive step toward rebuilding the tourism sector and creating more economic opportunities for residents.

On Bugarura Island, home to more than 2,000 people, community members also expressed optimism. They believe the festival will strengthen their involvement in local development and encourage efforts to conserve the island’s environment.

What to Expect at the 2025 Edition

According to Yves Iyaremye, Director of Yirunga Ltd, this year’s edition will introduce new and exciting experiences designed to attract both local and international tourists. Planned activities include:

– A 20-kilometer hike starting at Palega Beach Inn

– A sports tournament hosted at KaySun Hotel

– Boat races and swimming competitions on Lake Kivu

– Beach volleyball games along the lakeshore

– Eco-tourism tours focused on Boneza’s scenic coffee plantations

– Guided trips to Napoleon Island

– A cultural showcase featuring Inyambo, Rwanda’s royal long-horned cattle, swimming in Lake Kivu

A Key Opportunity for Boneza’s Development

Munyamahoro Muhizi Patrick, Executive Secretary of Boneza Sector, said the festival is a strategic opportunity to highlight Boneza’s potential for eco-tourism and cultural tourism. He emphasized the area’s natural beauty, bird species, modern hospitality facilities, and cultural heritage.

Rutsiro District Mayor Dativa Kayitesi stressed that the event aligns with the district’s long-term development goals. She urged residents and visitors to support environmental conservation, especially along Lake Kivu’s shores, by protecting trees and preserving the fragile lakeside ecosystem.

Venue and highlights

The festival will take place in the gardens of Palega Beach Inn, offering stunning views of Bugarura Island. One of the most anticipated attractions is the Boat Party scheduled for 13–14 December, where participants will enjoy live entertainment, food, and scenic lake views from boats cruising across Lake Kivu.

Organizers say the festival’s mission goes beyond entertainment. It seeks to promote green tourism, support local businesses, and encourage sustainable development in lakefront communities. Exhibitions, cultural performances, and community-led conservation programs will all be part of this effort.

Mayor Kayitesi added that the festival is expected to attract investors, create new opportunities for local entrepreneurs, and improve the livelihoods of residents in Boneza and surrounding areas.
