Energy Week InitiatedThe Minister made these comments during the launch of “Energy Week,” which was organized by Energy Private Developers (EPD) on Monday, September 9, 2024.

Dr. Gasore emphasized that although major progress has been made in offering Rwandans clean cooking solutions, additional efforts will be made to promote using environmentally-friendly fuels. He expressed, “A lot has been accomplished to ensure Rwandans can use clean cooking methods that benefit both their health and the environment.

Minister Dr. Jimmy Gasore also mentioned that they will persist in partnering with and uniting investors in renewable energy services, sharing knowledge and working together on various initiatives.

He remarked, “This week, we hope to connect investors in renewable energy. By collaborating, they can share insights. We have Rwandans, participants from abroad, researchers, and government institutions present. Sharing information helps us understand the ongoing projects, the government’s priorities, and the resources available, allowing us to plan effectively and work towards common objectives.”

Dr. Ivan Twagirashema, Chairperson of the Board comprising various Rwandan organizations and companies involved in electricity and energy, stated that awareness campaigns are being conducted and knowledge is being shared due to potential future energy shortages that may cause major problems.

Rwanda Aims for Improved Access to Clean Cooking FuelHe noted, “The main focus is on raising awareness so that individuals comprehend the energy situation in Rwanda, while also exchanging knowledge about advancements internationally, research, and innovative technologies.

This positions Rwanda for the future, as energy is critical for all other sectors. Lack of sufficient energy will create challenges in agriculture and other industries.”Dr. Twagirashema also pointed out that soon individuals will be able to cook using solar energy at a lower cost.He added, “Solar energy is advantageous since it eliminates the need to purchase fuel.

The slow adoption was mainly due to the high cost associated with energy storage in batteries, but recent global research indicates advancements in technology making batteries more economical.

In the near future, people will be able to cook at home using solar energy for affordable cooking and heating, free from reliance on charcoal, expensive electricity, or gas.”Rwanda is continuing its collaboration with other nations on energy projects. The Rusumo hydroelectric power plant was recently completed, providing electricity to the three neighboring countries involved in the project.Besides the Rusumo plant, there is also Shema Power, which generates electricity from methane gas extracted from Lake Kivu.
