Rwanda launches strategic partnership to improve public health infrastructure

The Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Health, has signed a five-year partnership agreement with global medical technology firm Siemens Healthineers to modernize the country’s public healthcare system.

The agreement was signed in Kigali on January 6, 2026, and is aimed at strengthening diagnostic and treatment services in public hospitals nationwide, in line with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the Health Sector Strategic Plan.

Under the partnership, more than 230 advanced medical imaging and treatment systems will be deployed across 19 public hospitals. These include CT scanners, MRI machines, X-ray systems, ultrasound devices, mammography units, molecular imaging scanners, and cardiac catheterization laboratories (CathLabs).

The Ministry of Health says the new equipment will significantly improve early disease detection and treatment, particularly for both communicable and non-communicable diseases, which continue to place a heavy burden on the country’s health system.

In addition to equipment installation, the partnership places strong emphasis on capacity building and skills development. Healthcare professionals will receive training and upskilling to ensure effective use of modern technology, improve service delivery, and enhance workforce retention. Digital and automation solutions will also be introduced to improve efficiency in healthcare facilities.

According to the Ministry, more than 500,000 patients are expected to benefit annually from improved access to quality diagnostic services, reduced patient waiting times, and minimized need for referrals to distant facilities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana said the partnership marks a new chapter in Rwanda’s healthcare journey, combining modern technology with skilled professionals to build a sustainable and equitable health system.

Siemens Healthineers described the agreement as a long-term commitment to supporting Rwanda’s healthcare ambitions, noting that the initiative will also promote environmentally sustainable practices and support the country’s goal of becoming a regional medical tourism hub.
